How to Promote an AI Model on Reddit Without Getting Banned

Reddit sends the highest-intent free traffic and bans faster than any other platform. How to use it right: karma, subreddit rules and a real system.

Why Reddit is worth the trouble

On Instagram people scroll. On Reddit people search. Someone who lands on your post got there because they were actively looking for exactly that, which is why Reddit traffic converts several times better than social traffic — and why almost every creator who monetizes seriously has a Reddit strategy.

The catch: Reddit is run by volunteer moderators who have seen every self-promotion trick that exists. Post like a marketer and you are gone in an hour, sometimes without a warning and sometimes without even being told. This guide is mostly about not getting banned, because that is the hard part.

Tip: Reddit is not connected to Publish. Instagram, TikTok, Threads and Fanvue are; Reddit you post by hand. That is deliberate — Reddit punishes anything that looks automated, and a scheduler is exactly what «automated» looks like.

The account: karma first, promotion later

A brand-new account that posts a link gets removed automatically, before a human even sees it. Most subreddits have a minimum karma and a minimum account age, and the filters are invisible — your post looks published to you and does not exist for anyone else. That is why people think «Reddit didn't work» when actually nothing they posted was ever visible.

  1. Spend the first two weeks commenting only. No links, no promotion, nothing about your model. Comment where you actually have something to say.
  2. Get past 100 comment karma and 30 days of account age before your first post. Those are the two thresholds most subreddits check.
  3. Fill the profile: avatar, banner, a short description. An empty profile is the first thing a moderator checks when deciding whether you are a person or a spam account.
  4. One account, one identity. Rotating accounts to dodge bans is the fastest way to get your whole IP flagged.

Picking subreddits: read the rules, literally

Every subreddit is its own country with its own law. Some allow self-promotion on certain days, some require a verification post before you can post at all, some ban AI-generated content outright. Reading the sidebar takes two minutes and saves you the account.

How to post so it survives

The rule that matters: give far more than you take. A useful ratio is nine posts that contribute something for every one that promotes. It sounds slow. It is the only thing that works for longer than a month.

  1. Upload the image to Reddit directly. Posts with external links get downranked and are the first thing spam filters catch.
  2. Write a title that stands on its own. On Reddit the title is the content — a lazy title kills a great photo.
  3. Put nothing in the post body the first hour. If people ask where to find more, answer in the comments. That single habit is the difference between a working account and a banned one.
  4. Reply to every comment for the first hour. Reddit weights early engagement heavily, and it is also how you look human.
  5. Never post the same thing to ten subreddits at once. Cross-posting identical content within minutes is the single clearest spam signal there is.

Tip: Generate the images in batches so you always have material, but write every title by hand for its subreddit. Reused captions are obvious, and obvious is what gets removed.

From Reddit traffic to paying subscribers

Reddit traffic is high-intent but impatient: people click, decide in seconds, and leave. So the destination matters more than the volume. Send them somewhere that answers «what do I get» immediately, not to a profile they have to interpret.

One last thing, and it is the one that decides whether this works: be honest about what your model is. Communities that allow AI content are fine with AI content — what they will not forgive is being misled. Labelling it costs you nothing and removes the only risk that actually ends accounts.
